We only require a relatively small amount of sodium for our body to function. Sodium is naturally present in many foods. The adequate intake is 460-920mg for adults and children 14-17yo, 400-800mg for children 9-13yo, 300-600mg for children 4-8yo and 100-300mg for children 1-3yo. However, the average intake is at almost double the recommended upper limit to reduce risks of chronic disease.
Excess sodium intake is linked with increased risks of high blood pressure (hypertension) which is a major risk factor for heart disease including heart failure, kidney disease, stroke, stomach cancer, osteoporosis and fluid retention (oedema). One teaspoon of salt (sodium chloride), approximately 5 grams, contains 2000mg of sodium.
We know you care about your health and we do too which is why all our meal bases have no added salt!
